The benefits of using a mattress topper can be split into two categories, increasing comfort and increasing the longevity of the mattress. They are also an excellent way of increasing the life of your bed and providing you with flexibility. Lets go into a little more detail on the benefits of mattress toppers.
1. Providing additional comfort layers:
If you choose to sleep on a core mattress without adding an additional topper, it will not be too long before the softer top component compresses under your bodyweight and the mattress will become discoloured through perspiration. Adding a topper gives another layer which will compress before the mattress; giving you more comfort but ultimately a layer that can be easily turned and rotated. We’ve spoken on mattress construction about the issues with one sided mattresses; a necessary construction method with foam beds. A topper helps to addresses this issue.
2. The longevity of the mattress:
Moving on to longevity of the mattress we need to tackle the uncomfortable subject matter of sleeping directly on your mattress. This means there is nothing there to combat the three main enemies to your mattress:
- Body Perspiration – On average the body releases up to two pints of moisture each night. This is through sweat, breathing and other fluids. The only place for this to go is into the covers, duvet and ultimately your mattress. A mattress topper allows you to stop sweat and perspiration from reaching your core mattress. So even though the topper and covers will still absorb perspiration, its far cheaper to remove, wash or even replace these than the entire mattress.
- Dead skin and bacteria – These will inevitably end up on the closest layers to the body and by using a topper again you can keep these away from your mattress. Memory foam , Hybrid foam and Latex toppers should also have removable covers, all of ours do, which you can wash along with your bedding.
- Undue settlement and indentations – As we have discussed on sagging, eventually foams will compress somewhat as this is the nature of the foam structure. By using a topper you ensure that the top layers take any sag and not the mattress. It also allows you to replace the topper should you need to, ie if your body weight increases significantly pushing the original suitable mattress towards its limits. Ultimately it will allow you to replace the top layer or tweak the mattress feel later on.
The additional benefits you get from utilising toppers will in the long run pay dividends, it allows your mattress to stay newer for longer and provides you with increased comfort. When the topper has taken all it can after the barrage of nightly activities, it is a small expenditure to replace as necessary rather than reaching the stage where the complete mattress requires replacement.

Mireia
Hi im interested in buying a latex topper. I have a visco foam new matress but have had bad back pain for ages and this new matress almost makes it worse. would you recommend a latex topper for me? another thing is do you deliver to spain? Lanzarote? if not i can get it send to friends in uk. but please give me your advise first. thanks
Hi Mireia I am afraid that we only deliver to the UK mainland, so we would have to deliver to your friends in the UK and you can then arrange onward shipping. Please note the mattress toppers are quite heavy.
The 100% natural latex topper will certainly add a softer top layer to your other wise firm bed. It won’t soften up the support element but will add a softer deeper top comfort layer. The toppers are two sided and fully turnable.
Please note mattress toppers are not covered by our 30 day love it or return it guarantee. – Gary

I am considering buying a topper for my Harrison mattress which is too firm for me. I can feel the springs digging into hips and shoulder and is very uncomfortable.
I am 5 for 4 and weight 8 stone 5. Because my bedroom is very cold in the winter due to 3 external walls, I use an electric blanket. So my question is which topper is safe to use with the blanket please.
Hi Mrs Kench, Sorry to hear your struggling with your firm mattress. Whilst a topper can help soften the top layers of a mattress it won’t completely change the tension, it can however take the edges off and make a mattress more comfortable.
If you use an electric blanket I’d advise that any topper will soften when used with an electric blanket so bear this in mind. You can use all our latex toppers with electric blankets. The latex toppers will give the best comfort and support given you will also be using an electric blanket. Memory foam and hybrid foam may soften too much with the heat from an electric blanket and are not recommended.

I have been looking at you toppers and wondered if you could advise me before deciding? I currently have a tempur mattress which is fine but the heat problem is an issue for me as it makes me sweat. If I were to purchase either a Latex or Coolblue topper would this help and also be suitable to go on top of my current mattress? If so could you advise which one you would go for. I’m swaying towards the latex as this sounds like the superior choice.
Many thanks
Hi Rob, Our toppers are suitable for pretty much all mattresses, with a very few specific exceptions.
Coolblue is a great hybrid foam but if you’re finding temper too warm I don’t think coolblue would be cool enough for you.
Latex is the superior choice when compared to memory foam which is heat retentive. That said a topper won’t per se remove all the heat from your temper mattress. It will still retain heat and require this to mould properly. A topper may however reduce the heat slightly, latex is a breathable material and is cooler than memory foam/hybrid foam. I always bring this to customers attention as there is no quick or complete fix for over heating when it comes to foam mattresses. Lee

Hi
I’d be really grateful if you could offer some advice.
We have a king size memory foam mattress, now approx 4 ½ years old, quite a good one (about £750 at time of purchase, from a specialist back-care shop).
Whilst it is still fairly firm it is just starting to have an indentation on each side whilst the middle still feels ‘as new’.
I’ve carried out quite a bit of research on your site, and been convinced that returning to a pocket spring mattress is the way to go in the long run, but we can’t afford the £1085 I think would be worthwhile for the Artisan Naturals we like the look of for another couple of years.
In order to get an extra few years of life out of the mattress I was think of adding your 5cm Latex 80% natural topper.
Two questions:
1 Would this work OK on the Memory Foam mattress to help with the extended (comfortable) life
2 How long would you expect such a topper to last? Would it still be suitable for use on your Artisan Bed if we did change in (say) 2 years?
[In case it helps with your answer, I am 6ft 2ins, 14.5 stone, my wide is 5ft 9ins 12 stone – we were both happy with the Memory Foam Mattress when purchsed]
Many Thanks for your help. Neil
Thanks for getting in touch regarding toppers. Foam beds are excellent for pressure reliving but do suffer from compression, ie the foams compress over time. Overtime all foam beds will compress to some degree its managing to reduce the impact in terms of sags or dips, by rotating and turning the parts of your mattress that can be turned and rotating! I’ll respond in terms to your questions to try and help you with your decision.
1. Whilst toppers will provide you with additional comfort, they will not necessarily increase the support from your mattress. I.e if you mattress has sagged or dipped the topper will only conform to this dip or sag it wont sit over it and remove it. The base of the mattress, i.e reflex foam in a memory foam mattress provides the support and other layers lessening levels of support and more comfort. A latex topper would increase the comfort of a bed but would also mould to the current shape of the bed which you’ve raised so it wouldn’t remove the dip maybe only minimise it at best. It depends how severe the settlement or dip is.
2. Latex is incredibly durable but durations depend on maintenance, i.e turning and rotating and how much stress is put on the bed over time. I would expect with monthly care it should last especially given how durable latex is as a material.
We hope that helps! Lee
