So you’re in a position to go looking for your new dream bed. The first stop for many people is to go and do the rounds at the retailers, after all they are the experts? I’m sure they are? Are they?
As you arrive you see massive red and white sale signs, further reductions, half price, free base with selected beds and interest free purchase signs almost blind you. Its a bed sale of the century!
The sales assistant makes their move as soon as you step foot through the door. What kind of bed are you looking for? The golden million dollar question, but I bet most people simply state the size of bed they want rather than anything specific. With just a few soft, medium firm style questions as you’re marched off around the store.
Then you’re taken on a journey of confusion, try this, try that and ‘this one has xx off, this one comes with xx and this has been recently reduced further’. I can almost guarantee no discussion over bodyweight, the bed you currently have or any problems you have encountered will be asked at this stage.
You get bombarded with the killer question ‘how do you find this one?’ after your 15 seconds awkwardly sprawled on the beds they have for trial. Nothing is given in writing all the advice is face to face and almost impossible to keep up with and follow.
Any discussion about the components of the mattress will be discussed at a incredibly high level, confusing you further, if you ask for more information you will probably get even more high level confusion or just shown more beds. You get further and further confused.
The bottom line is none of this is helping you choose the correct mattress. It is just helping you choose something, anything that will make a sale. Lets stop that scenario!

Hi,
You appear to have amazing knowledge of beds perhaps you can tell me why the Superior Comfort Blenheim Ortho 1000 Mattress which has pocket springs and a 5 year guarantee is so inexpensive? Is it worth purchasing or am I missing something due to my ignorance?
Regards Joseph
Hi Joseph, I can give you an insight into this kind of mattress. The mattress you have seen is a one sided no turn mattress. This means its some form of pocket spring unit that only has one comfort layer on top. usually either reflex foam or some polyester combination. Given its tension it will be a firm solid bed with more than likely reflex foam as the only comfort layer. It’s a bargain for its price, if you want a firm bed. I would also estimate its life span is far less than the 5 year guarantee. After all you only have one side to this firm mattress. I couldn’t find any details on what the guarantee covers, I would assume its heavily caveated. That said this is all speculation as its description is very vague ‘sumptuously filled’, what exactly does that mean?! If you do get one I’d be interested to get your feedback on it! Lee

Hi,
I’ve been to dreams to try out various beds, and I think I’m really tempted by a memory foam mattress as I love that slow sink feeling. I’m 12 stone and have been tempted by their heavley eden. I googled it as I know its an expensive mattress and that’s when I found your site.
http://www.dreams.co.uk/mattresses/memory-foam-mattresses/heavenly-eden-mattress
I’m now even more confused as it seems really expensive, even though I quite liked it. Can you give me your honest advice on this bed please?
Amanda.
hi Amanda. Looking at the specifications for the dreams heavenly Eden mattress it does seem expensive given is memory foam. The specs are.
Specifications:
– 5 zone Therapur memory foam mattress
– 6cm super soft top layer
– Purotex treatment
– Comfort grade 4 – Medium
– Made in the UK
There are no more details on either the density or grade of memory foam. We know there’s just 6cm of memory foam. Compared to 10cm on our genesis starter range at half the cost!!
if you have a budget of £1000 we would recommend you spend this money more wisely on a solid core latex mattress such as our fusion range which is far more advanced than memory foam. There’s an abundance of benefits to latex when compared to synthetic memory foam. You can read these in or latex topic posts. That and a solid core natural latex mattress is completely turntable compared to the heavenly Eden which is one sided.
Please get in touch if you want to discuss further Amanda.

Hi, firstly what a fantastic site John Ryan, I wish I had found this earlier as I’ve recently, 6 months ago, purchased a memory foam bed from Bensons that was less than ideal!! I have back problems and the sales assistant told me the igel would be great for that. I bought the iGel Atalanta in a divan set for £1499. I’m still finding it quite hot and that I struggle to move in it, its a bit like quick sand at times, which is making my back pain worse!! I’ve tried seeing if they will replace it but its been a bit of a struggle and I’ve kind of given up. I’m thinking of putting it in my spare room and forgetting about the dreadful purchase! I really wish I’d done my research rather than just seeing the sale and discount sign!!!
I’ve heard latex is a better material and I really would like to find out more, what would you recommend?
Sally
Hi Sally, Sorry to hear you’re struggling with your current mattress. One feature of any foam is that they do retain heat to certain degrees. Memory foam is one of the hottest, hybrid foams reduce this heat due to some of them having a lower Visco-elastic threshold such as Coolblue, or non heat retentive such as Laygel. One of coolest foams is natural latex as its breathable.
Latex also offers great progressive comfort such as the initial soft sink followed by support. You don’t need multiple layers with quality natural solid core latex as latex has everything it needs to provide the comfort and support. We also match our range with latex toppers which increases the comfort even further adding a softer top layer. I would need to know your weight and preferred tension to properly advise, that said each product in the shop has a weight guide and tension. Please get back in touch if you need any further help. Lee
